Kozhikode: Vivid impressions of ‘festivals’ and ‘picnics’ unfurling in the realm of children’s imagination were portrayed in myriad colours by more than 300 budding artists at The Hindu Young World painting competition held at the Snehanjali Community Hall here on Saturday. The Kozhikode regional edition of the contest organised in two categories - junior and senior - was attended by students from the five districts of north Kerala. S. Sidarth of Silver Hills Public School, Kozhikode, won the first prize in the senior category, while Salvya S. Raj of Sanjos Metropolitan School, Thalassery, came first in the junior section. Rahul Sarvothaman, representing Sreepuram English Medium School, Kannur, and P. Gopika of C.M.H.S. Mannur, Kozhikode, came second and third in the senior category. K.P. Amaldev Nambiar of S.N. Vidyamandir, Thalap, Kannur, and J.S. Sheethala from AUP School, Balussery, came second and third in the junior category. ‘Picnic spot’ or the ‘school library’ (optional) was the topic for the juniors while it was either a ‘visit to department store’ or ‘festival scenes’ for the seniors. C. Licy and Suchitra, art teachers at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kozhikode, and Hilltop Public School, Kozhikode, were the judges. Kerala Sahitya Akademi president M. Mukundan, who was the chief guest, presented the prizes. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mukundan observed that most of the paintings were of “high standards with good sense of anatomy and technical know-how”. He urged the participants not to sideline their hobby at any stage in their life. “If you want to be a doctor, be it, but be a painter-doctor,” he said adding that such a facet to one’s profile makes a “beautiful difference”. Consolation prizes were also been given to seven select contestants in each category. Participation certificates were distributed to the students. Lotte BooPRoo was the title sponsor of the event while soft drink Maaza was the beverage partner.
