Of names and colours

HYDERABAD: The Cabinet meeting on Friday chaired by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy witnessed an interesting discussion on names of six irrigation projects ending with ‘Sujala Sravanti’.

As the Cabinet was discussing the naming of the projects after national and State leaders, some Ministers are reported to have questioned the use of ‘Sujala Sravanti’, which was popularised by former Chief Minister N. T. Rama Rao. It may be mentioned here that the Galeru Nagari and Handri Neeva projects in Rayalaseema end with ‘Sujala Sravanti’.

Sources said Dr. Reddy brushed aside the objection stating that it was not the patent of the Telugu Desam Party. He is understood to have referred to the yellow and pink colours identified with two political parties.

He was quoted as saying that some time ago Agriculture Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy had telephoned him and wondered why ‘Sakshi’ Telugu daily launched by Chief Minister’s son Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy prominently used yellow colour. Dr Reddy went on to explain that no body could claim right to use these colours .
