Fresh norms for registration of births

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has issued fresh guidelines providing for registration of births of orphaned or abandoned children.

Minister for Local Self-government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said people adopting children through recognised adoption placement agencies could apply for registration of the birth of infants at the panchayat, corporation or municipality office where the agency is situated.

The local self-government should not demand certificate of the District Medical Officer for registration.

The Minister added that institutions taking care of abandoned children should also take steps to register their births. Birth certificates should be given on the basis of affidavits given by such institutions regarding date of birth. Names of parents could be omitted.

He said some births had gone unregistered because of the complexity of procedures. This was being remedied, the Minister added.
