Water from KRP Dam to be released on December 10

KRISHNAGIRI: Water from the KRP Dam in Krishnagiri will be released for the second crop on December 10. A proposal has been sent to the government for its approval, sources in the Public Works Department told ‘The Hindu’ on Saturday.

The sources said, “as the intermittent rain continues in the catchment areas, the dam with a storage of 1035 cubic ft will be filled to its full capacity in a day or two. The dam’s water storage height is 52 ft. As on Saturday, water level is 50.85 ft. (the same day last year it was 49.9 ft.).

The inflow of water to the dam is 525 cft. In addition, 273 cft of water is let out per second. Excess water let out to the South Pennar is 127 cft, right canal - 91 cft, and left canal - 43 cft.

The dam provides water for irrigating 9,012 acres of cultivable land.

Excess water released to the South Pennar river reaches Nedungal Dam and from there through supply channels it reaches Barur Lake, Benugondapuram and finally Pambar Dam.

Water gushing out from the KRP Dam also reaches Thindal Lake and Karimanglam Lake. Barur Lake irrigates 4,560 acres and Benugondapuram Lake - 2,000 acres. Avadhanapatti and Thimmavaram lakes in Krishnagiri have filled up and excess water was released through the channels.

As many as 26 lakes in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri have filled up and rest will fill up if the rain continues for one or two days. In Krishnagiri district, all 12 lakes were filled up and in Dharmapuri, out of 22 lakes, eight are yet to fill up, an official says.

Because of the efforts taken by the Palacode MLA K.P. Anbazhagan, Thindal and Karimangalam lakes have become full after 15 years. As the KRP Dam is filling to its capacity, the only tourist spot in Krishnagiri will attract more and more people in the coming days, an official says.

The rainfall registered in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri district is as follows: Krishnagiri - 36.2 mm; Krishnagiri Dam - 26.4 mm; Uthankarai - 25 mm; Barur - 36.8 mm; Nedunkal - 34 mm; Anchetti - 21 mm; Denkanikottai - 13.6 mm; Royakottai - 7.6 mm; Hosur - 16 mm; and Sulagiri - 26 mm. The district registered a total rainfall of 346.4 mm. Average rainfall in the district is 28.8 mm.

Dharmapuri: Pappireddypatti - 39 mm; Harur - 32 mm; Pennagaram - 32 mm; Dharmapuri - 26, mm; Palacode - 24 mm; and

Collectorate - 27 mm.
