This cartoon by V. Gopal of Bangalore won the first prize in the competition

BANGALORE: When there is a blanket ban on smoking in public places, why should there be no check on the smoke emitted by vehicles in public places? This question prominently figured at the three-day exhibition-cum-competition of cartoons organised by the Karnataka Cartoonists’ Association along with the Transport Department here on Friday.

Organised annually, the exhibition seeks to convey to the masses the bad effects of vehicular pollution.

The exhibition was slated to be inaugurated by Transport Commissioner Bhaskar Rao. However, owing to former Prime Minister V.P. Singh’s death, the celebration part was cancelled. The exhibition will be open for public between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. till Sunday.

After watching the exhibits, Mr. Bhaskar Rao said the department was considering holding such exhibitions at the regional transport office-level across the State. He complimented the artists, saying one cartoon was equal to many slogans being propagated by the department. A cartoon by V. Gopal of Bangalore won the first prize and the one by James Vaz from Manipal showing the Kempe Gowda statue in the city enveloped in smoke and the founder of Bangalore using an oxygen cylinder to breathe won the second prize.

Santosh Sasihitlu from Kundapur depicted the earth cautioning the moon saying people will first send rockets there followed by buses, cars and other vehicles. This won the third prize.

Association president H.B. Manjunath and general secretary S.V. Padmanabha were present.
