BANGALORE: In an apparent violation of the provisions of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) (J.J) Act 2000, the city police on Tuesday released a press note giving details of a 17-year-old for his alleged involvement in two cases of burglary. The press note was about the arrest by the Kamakshipalya police of Ashok (19) of Yeshwantapur and the 17-year-old boy for their alleged involvement in the burglary of cellphones and other gadgets from a mobile phone shop on Magadi Road. They were accused of stealing two cellphones, two watches and Rs. 1,050 from a finance firm. Not only did the police reveal the identity of the boy to the media but also released his photograph. Moreover they defended the action and denied it was a violation. Section 21 of the J.J Act prohibits publication of the name of an accused aged below 18 in any newspaper or visual media. It does not permit disclosure of address or any particulars that lead to the identification of the minor. Police Commissioner Shankar M. Bidari denied any violation. “The prohibition applies to a juvenile in conflict with the law under the Act. We cannot give names of those caught while begging and those subjected to cruelty,” he said. .
