Undeclared curfew in J&K

Srinagar: Police fired teargas shells and used batons to disperse hundreds who staged anti-poll protests in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said.

Shouting anti-poll and pro-freedom slogans, hundreds took to the streets at Pulwama town and tried to take out a march in violation of prohibitory orders shortly after Friday prayers, the sources said.

Several youth indulged in stone-pelting and the clashes were still continuing when last reports were received, the sources said adding at least five persons were injured in the clashes so far.

Protest demonstrations were also reported from other parts of the valley including Maisuma, S.D. Colony and Noorbagh in Srinagar, Shopian, Anantnag and Kupwara district towns and some tehsil headquarters, the sources said.

They said the protesters dispersed peacefully.

Separatist co-ordination committee, spearheading the anti-poll boycott campaign in the valley, has asked people to observe protest demonstrations against elections after Friday prayers but the authorities imposed an undeclared curfew to thwart the widespread protests. --PTI
