BANGALORE: Nine persons died and 25 were seriously injured when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus collided with a truck transporting an excavator on the Bangalore-Mysore road in the early hours of Thursday. The bus driver and conductor are among the dead. The accident occurred at Doddamalur Cross near Chennapatna, 62 km from here, around 3.30 a.m. The bus was on its way to Bangalore from Virajpet. The passengers blamed the driver, who was apparently drowsy, for the accident. A senior police official said the driver, Shivappa Nagappa Rathod (28), a native of Koliayal Palya in Surpur taluk of Gulbarga district, got married a fortnight ago. The dead have been identified as K. Gowramma, the conductor, a resident of Hemapur village in Magadi taluk; M.P. Atiq Ahmed (25) of Virajpet; Huvamma (50) of Kutarodi village near Bhovikeri in Virajpet; Vijay Kumar (35) of Kumbaldadu in Kodagu; Karumbayya (30) of Nanderi in Kodagu; Lalithamma (48) of Magadi Road 4th Cross in Bangalore; Nasir (20) of Chittage and Shameer (19) of Bemala in Virajpet. The injured were admitted to various hospitals in Chennapatna and Ramanagara. Some of the injured are undergoing treatment at NIMHANS and KIMS in Bangalore after getting first aid in Chennapatna and Ramanagara. Many of the injured have lost their limbs, the police official told The Hindu. He said the driver was sleepy and did not notice the road divider. The vehicle hit the divider and landed on the other side of the road, hitting the truck that was coming from the opposite side. The truck driver slowed down when he saw the bus and even swerved to the extreme left to avoid the bus, but the bus went right into the truck’s side.
