Coimbatore: The police in West Zone are stepping up the drive against road rule violations in order to combat the increase in road accidents (both fatal and non-fatal). While constant efforts were on by the respective unit officers to identify road engineering defects and step up road safety education, the police pin hopes on a sustained and stepped up enforcement against road rule violations for bringing down the accident rate. The Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, Pramod Kumar had already asked the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Coimbatore and Salem Range and Superintendents of Police at Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem Rural, Namakkal, Erode, Coimbatore Rural and the Nilgiris districts to step up the enforcement drive. A glance at particulars in respect of the period of January 1, 2008 to November 1, 2008 in comparison with the statistics relating to the corresponding period last year revealed that there had been a marginal increase in the number of fatal as well as non-fatal accidents.
