Ahmadiyya leader arrives

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the supreme spiritual leader (Khalifa) of the Ahmadiyya community, a 200-million-strong worldwide Islamic sect, arrived here on Friday evening.

He will declare open a new mosque, Masjid Umar, on St. Benedict Road in North Ernakulam, on Saturday morning. He will also symbolically open four other Ahmadiyya mosques at Palluruthy, Airapuram, Kodungalloor and Alappuzha. Khalifa Masroor, who is based in London, the sect’s world headquarters, has been in Kerala since Monday as part of the centenary of the founding of the Ahmadiyaa Khilafat. He will leave on Tuesday for Khadiyani in Punjab, where the centenary’s closing ceremonies will be held.

Khalifa Masroor, an agricultural economist born in Pakistan, is a descendant of the founder. Though Ahmadiyyas have made their presence in most countries, some Muslims do not regard them as part of the Islamic faith.
