KOCHI: Late diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy might lead to blindness, Dr Augustine Mampilly, president of the Cochin Ophthalmic Club, has said. Addressing mediapersons at the Ernakulam Press Club on Thursday, he said that recent trends in the treatment of the disease would be among the topics that would be discussed at the three-day conference of the Kerala Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons that would be held at the Gokulam Convention Centre here from Friday to Sunday. “It would provide the delegates with an update on recent developments in ophthalmology. India is increasingly been seen as the diabetic capital of the world and awareness is required to prevent and treat diabetic retinopathy.” The club’s organising secretary, Dr Revathy Ramesh, said that since there is no permanent cure for diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma, tablets alone would not cure the ailment. The chairman of the organising committee, Dr K Narayanan Kutty, too was present.
