Book on medieval navigation

Staff Reporter

Kochi: Vice-Admiral Sunil K. Damle, Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command and Chairman of the Maritime History Society, on Thursday released a volume on Navigation Environment of Ancient and Medieval Ports of Tamilaham written by Professor B. Arunachalam, who retired as head of the department of geography at the University of Mumbai.

The book explores the pioneering work by marine archaeologists in near-shore underwater areas and integrates the navigational environment thereby presenting a holistic sea perspective of old and medieval ports of Tamilaham, mainly the areas encompassing the kingdoms of the Cheras, the Cholas and the Pandyas. The high quality illustrations, too, help bring out the early, medieval and colonial ports of Tamilaham from the 3rd century BC to the 17th century AD.
