KOCHI: The Regional Sports Centre (Kochi) won the South Zone round of the Manchester United Premier Cup under-15 football tournament in Goa on Thursday and entered the semifinals. RSC blanked Pondicherry Coaching Centre 4-0 in its last group match with goals from Ronald Xavier, Abhishek Srinivasan, C. Raja and captain Abhishek Joshi. RSC had lost its opener, by a lone goal, to Chennai’s Redeemers Football Academy but recovered nicely after that and defeated its Kochi citymate, Viva Kerala under-15, 2-0 through goals from the very promising Akhil Joseph and Ronald. Viva Kerala, which defeated Pondicherry CC 3-0 in its opener, blanked Redeemers 3-0 in its last league game on Thursday. Viva Kerala and RSC finished in a tie — two wins and a loss each — but the latter, with a superior goal difference, emerged the group winner and qualified for the semifinals. Golden Threads winsA second-half charge saw Golden Threads upset the fancied Central Excise 2-1 and enter the final of the Navy Week State-level football tournament at the floodlit Fort Kochi Parade Ground on Thursday night. State player Bijesh Ben gave Central Excise the lead in the sixth minute but it was all Golden Threads in the second session with Sumesh (50th minute) and Sanjay (69th) producing the goals. Thrissur XI meets Kozhikode’s Malabar United in the second semifinal on Friday. — Principal Correspondent
