Achieves breakthrough in developing wilt-resistant pigeon pea crop
HYDERABAD: Scientists of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) achieved a breakthrough in developing wilt-resistant pigeon pea crop in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA).
The new variety preferred by farmers and markets in the medium and long duration varieties were released in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique and now being grown extensively with higher yields, said ICRISAT Director-General William Dar in a release.
The institute also won the trust of the communities by implementing fertilizer micro-dosing which allowed the poor farmers to apply small, affordable and effective amounts of fertilizer to their impoverished land for improved soil health and production and quality seed at affordable cost. The institute helped Ethiopian farmers by developing and introducing a range of large seeded varieties of chickpea and enabled Ethiopia emerge as a major chickpea exporting country and also developing better varieties of sorghum and groundnut varieties, he said.
