Cabinet accepts ‘in principle’ quota for Arundhatiyars

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The State Cabinet on Thursday accepted in principle the Janardhanam Committee report for reservation for Arundhatiyars within the existing quota for Scheduled Castes.

A Cabinet Sub-Committee will be set up to go into the modalities of implementing the reservation.

Justice Janardhanam was invited to brief the Cabinet on Thursday.

He detailed the reasons for a separate reservation for those in the most backward state of development among Scheduled Castes and said that they needed to be accorded three per cent reservation from the 18 per cent quota.

He listed Aundhatiyar, Sakkiliyar, Mathari, Adi Andhrar, Pakadai, Madika and Thotti as the sub-castes that needed to be included.
