Padi junction clogged

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Traffic on the busy Padi junction was clogged for about an hour as residents of Annai Sathya Nagar, Villivakkam, resorted to a road roko on Thursday morning.

About 150 residents blocked the Inner Ring Road at Padi junction in protest against inaction of government agencies in pumping out stagnant water in their area. Traffic, which moved slow in the junction due to a grade separator project there, came to a standstill. Motorists proceeding to Retteri and Ambattur were stranded in the heavy showers due to the demonstration.

The protestors said that water from the nearby canal passing through western suburbs of Korattur and Ambattur overflowed onto the roads and inundated their locality. About 200 families were residing in the area for the past two decades. K. Bhavani, a resident of Annai Sathya Nagar, said “Water entered many of the houses in the area. With ankle deep water in my house, most of my belongings and valuable electronic goods have been damaged.”
