Participants of the Andhra Pradesh State Group-3 Rural Tournament taking out a march past at the Kodi Ramamurty Stadium in Srikakulam on Thursday. — Srikakulam: District Collector N. Srikanth on Thursday declared open the Andhra Pradesh State Group-3 Rural Tournament – 2008-09. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Srikanth, who is also Chairman of the Organising Committee, said that sports and games were not just for wining medals but for promotion of spirit of oneness and national integration as well. He hoped that children, particularly students, would learn to do things together and widen their horizon of thinking and imbibe moral values. Festive atmosphereNarsannapeta MLA and vice-president of the State Hockey Association Dharmana Krishna Das said that he was delighted to participate in the sports meet that generated a festive atmosphere among students and sportsmen. Stating that Srikakulam too contributed its share in the international sports meets like Olympics and Common Wealth Games, he recalled the achievements of weightlifter Karanam Malleshwari, who hailed from the district. Srikakulam MP K. Yerrannaidu described the sports meet as a glorious event hosted by the District Sports Authority. He stated that sports would develop the spirit of friendship and a sense of oneness. He spoke of the need to enhance the present budgetary allocations for sports both by the Centre and the states and promote rural sports in a big way. He asked the participants not to get demoralised by the results at the end of the day. Convener of the Rural Tournament and secretary of the District Sports Development Organisation L. Devadanam said that the four-day events included athletics, hockey and wrestling. Some 1,200 boys and girls from 22 districts would be participating.
