Cyclone crosses Karaikal coast; minimum damage
Special Correspondent
KARAIKAL: Cyclone Nisha crossed the coast near Karaikal around Thursday morning, officials said, but damages were minimal due to the efforts of the district administration to remove vulnerable people to government shelters.
Nearly 12,000 families were housed in government shelters and provided with 50,000 packets to weather the strong winds and the heavy rains.
While 5,940 hectares of paddy were submerged, there was no loss of human life on Thursday, officials said.
“We have formed an eight-member damage assessment team to study the effects of the cyclone on the district. Until normalcy returns, people in the affected areas can avail of the facilities at the government shelters along with the promised 2-litres of kerosene (for all family cardholders) and 10-kilograms of rice (only for BPL cardholders),” District Collector N. Vasanthakumar said.
Revenue Minister Malladi Krishna Rao had reviewed the situation on Wednesday, and the damage assessment team would also see further effects of the cyclone.
Sources said that a few boats were damaged near Tirumalairayanpattinam and a few houses were also damaged near the coast. However, complete information would be available in the next day or two, Dr. Vasanthakumar said.
