THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby informed the Assembly on Thursday that the government had appointed expert committees, each headed by luminaries in their field to study the possibilities of improving the quality of research in the various fields. Replying to a debate on the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (Amendment) Bill, introduced in the Assembly to replace an ordinance, Mr. Baby said expert committees had been appointed for Music education (headed by musician T.N. Krishnan), Basic Science (headed by P. Balaram, Director, Indian Institute of Science), Social Science (headed by historian Romila Thapar), Humanities (headed by educationist Dr. U Ananthamurthy) and Fine Arts ( headed by artist A. Ramachandran). A panel headed by Kumar Sahini had already submitted its report on setting up the School of Performance Aesthetics and Culture and the government had started implementing its recommendations. He said the government had taken such steps to improve the quality of education in the respective fields. He informed the House that several luminaries in the diverse fields had already given their assent to be members of the committee. He said the amendments sought to change the status of NUALS as a self-financing university. Owing to its self-financing status, NUALS was not in a position to obtain grants from the UGC.
