V.P. Singh a people’s leader: VS

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has described the former Prime Minister V.P. Singh’s demise as a heavy loss to the democratic, secular and progressive politics of the country.

In a message here on Thursday, he said that V.P. Singh was a people’s leader who gave the lead for bringing to an end the Congress’ monopoly over power and corrupt administration and setting up a secular and progressive government.

He had always adopted a firm stand against communal fascists. He gave the lead for uniting democratic forces against the demolition of the Babri Masjid which was part of the Sangh Parivar’s plan to divide the people communally. He took steps for providing benefits including reservation to a section which was kept suppressed socially and economically for centuries.

His steps were a driving force for the surge of the backward communities throughout the country. He had contributed much for the development of Kerala. He would always find an unforgettable place in the history of the country.

Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohamed Kutty said that V.P. Singh was a leader who attached much importance to secular value.

His demise was a big loss to secular movements. Education Minister M.A. Baby said that V.P. Singh was the symbol of an alternative to the corrupt Congress administration at the Centre and the Sangh Parivar’s bid to gain strength in Indian politics through a communal and fascist agenda.

He had taken the initiative to implement the Mandal Commission report.

RSP State secretary V.P. Ramakrishna Pillai said V.P. Singh had stood for the welfare of the downtrodden both as a political leader and as the Prime Minister.

Janata Dal (S) general secretary Varughese George said that he made the nation give top priority to social justice and secularism.
