Special Correspondent

On pleas relating to November 12 clash

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court will pass orders on December 1 on petitions relating to the November 12 clash at the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College here.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.K. Ganguly and Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla, on Thursday posted the petitions for orders on Monday after conclusion of elaborate arguments.

Various views and suggestions were expressed before the Bench with regard to filling of vacancies of lecturers in the law college here, student discipline, roll-call, security arrangements, entry of students into the college campus, immediate and long-term measures to be taken for improving the infrastructure in the college and the hostel. A suggestion was made that with a view to restoring normality, the college, which was closed following the incident, should be opened and examinations allowed to continue.

After ascertaining the preparedness for holding the examinations, in his oral observation, Justice Ibrahim Kalifulla said the examinations could continue from December 10. Before holding examinations, a parent-teacher meeting should be held and the parents informed about the court orders. There should be a similar meeting before the college opened in January after the examinations. The parents should give an assurance that their wards would behave well. The Chief Justice said the examinations should be held under strict vigil.
