Following tradition: Zilla panchayat president Chandrakumar (centre) receiving the lamp at the inauguration of the State-level Athletic Meet for schoolchildren in Shimoga on Thursday. SHIMOGA: The State-level athletic meet for secondary school children began at the Nehru Stadium here on Thursday. Nearly 3,000 schoolchildren from all over the State are participating in the three-day meet being organised jointly by the Department of Public Instruction, district administration and the zilla panchayat. The president of the Shimoga zilla panchayat, Chandrakumar, released pigeons to mark the inauguration of the meet. H.C. Basavarajappa, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Education and Health of the zilla panchayat, hoisted the flag. President of the Shimoga City Municipal Council M. Shankar presided over the inaugural function. Athlete Vaishnavi carried the torch of the meet, while Raghavendra of the Adichunchanagiri High School administered the oath to the participants. Deputy Director of Public Instruction S.L. Chauvan welcomed the gathering. B.S. Ananth Nayak proposed a vote of thanks.
