Heavy rain continues to lash Vellore

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: Heavy rain continued to lash Vellore district on Thursday. Vellore town received the highest rainfall of 89.4 mm during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Thursday.

The rain has improved the drinking water situation in several towns and villages, including Vellore, which did not receive enough rain from southwest monsoon this year.

People are optimistic that the rain will help to recharge groundwater and ensure enough water in the summer. But the rain was not sufficient enough to recharge groundwater in the Palar river, where the drinking water headworks of the Vellore Corporation and several municipalities and town and village panchayats are located.

According to sources, there was no flowing water in the river, which received good flow only when Karnataka releases water from the Bethamangalam reservoir or when the reservoir overflows.

Farmers have said that the rain had helped to moisten the parched earth.

But, more rain was needed to recharge irrigation borewells, they said.

The rainfall recorded (in mm) in different parts of Vellore district during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Thursday are Vellore 89.4, Arakkonam 87, Alangayam 76, Ambur 72, Sholinghur 70, Walajapet 53, Vaniyambadi 40, Melalathur 39.8, Gudiyatham 34.8, Arcot 32.7 and Tirupattur 24.5.
