Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: A five-member team, which is part of the second Common Review Mission (CRM) of National Rural Health Mission, is on a visit to the State to review and evaluate the progress of Kerala in the implementation of National Rural Health Mission. The team has chosen Thiruvananthapuram and Wayanad as the districts for evaluation. This is the first time that Kerala is being evaluated by the CRM. The CRM was set up as part of the Mission Steering Group’s mandate of review and concurrent evaluation. Annual appraisals are done in 13 States. The CRM provides occasion for sharing of experiences across States, discussions with stakeholders and an opportunity for mid course corrections by the mission at all levels. It seeks to undertake spot appraisal of the health system and reflects on the success of strategies and policies. The team will hold meetings with officials and conduct field visits before filing State reports to the Centre. Though NRHM was launched in 2005, the programme gained momentum in Kerala only by the end of 2006. The team, consisting of Sunil Nandraj, K. S. Jacob, Narendra Gupta, Amarjeet Bhatia and Rattan Chand, held discussions with Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy, Health Secretary Vishwas Mehta and State NRHM Director Dinesh Arora. A presentation on the State’s health scenariowas made by the State Mission. The perceptible changes in the State’s health scenario after the implementation of NRHM were presented. Aim of mission“The CRM is not a fault-finding mission. It is to understand what every State has done to implement the various components of NRHM and to analyse where improvements could be made,” a senior Health official told The Hindu. The team will go on field visits from Thursday.
