THANJAVUR: Nearly four lakh acres of samba and thaladi paddy crops have submerged in the heavy rains in the last three days in the Cauvery delta region of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts out of the five lakh acres of samba and about one lakh acres of thaladi paddy crops. A senior official of the Agriculture department said that the paddy crops in upper region of Thanjavur district could be saved but the damage would be heavy in the low-lying lands in the two districts as water from the fields would not recede quickly. Normal life was paralysed in both the districts as a lot of trees uprooted in the heavy winds and rain and fell on the roads at several places, disrupting communication links and power supply. Power supply was switched off in several parts of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts, particularly in coastal belt as a precautionary measure. Widespread rain was reported for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday. An average 155 mm of rainfall was recorded in Tiruvarur district and 170 mm in Thanjavur district.
