TIRUCHI: An armed gang which allegedly kidnapped a money lender in the city on Tuesday was arrested by a team after a chase. The team seized the vehicle used by the gang and country made weapons. However, two of the gang – Guna and Sundarapandi – managed to escape after allegedly threatening the public. The police acted on a complaint preferred by Selvam, brother-in-law of the money lender, Balakrishnan of Chinthamani. According to the complaint, the gang had made a threat call to Balakrishnan’s wife saying that her husband would be murdered if their demand for a ransom of Rs. 10 lakh was not met with. They had asked her to wait with the ransom in front of the Government Hospital. Upon seeing the police team at the specified time, the gang attempted to flee in a car. However, the team led by Inspector Kannan cornered the gang at Kalnayakkan Street in Woraiyur area. While Guna and Sundarapandi gave a slip, the police arrested the remaining five members Anand (32), Vinodkumar (24), Anand (32), Jambu alias Jambukeswaran (36) and Christhu Vimalraj (24), and released Balakrishnan from their custody. A case has been registered in Srirangam police station and further investigations are on.
