Purandeswari for expansion of inclusive education

Disadvantaged groups should be given special opportunities
HYDERABAD: Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, D. Purandeswari, on Wednesday called for expansion of inclusive education to encompass equality of opportunity and affirmative action for all disadvantaged groups.
She was speaking at the three-day 48th session of International Conference on Education hosted by International Bureau of Education and UNESCO, at Geneva, Switzerland, according to a press release.
“There must be equality of opportunity to all, with freedom and dignity, and without social or political obstacles. In particular, individuals belonging to disadvantaged groups should be provided special opportunities to develop their skills”.
Highlighting India’s policies and strategies, she said it was aimed at building not merely an inclusive education system but creating an inclusive society. Thus, several groups have been focal point for the interventions in the sector of education like Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), Educationally Other Backward Classes (OBCs), minorities and girls. The conference is being attended by more than 700 delegates from over 100 countries education and related sectors, according to a press release from the Union Minister’s office here.
