KOLKATA:The police of West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district registered on Wednesday two cases against Trinamool Congress MLA, Sonali Guha, for causing obstruction in discharge of duty and criminal intimidation, among other offences. Ms. Guha, had stormed into Nodhakhali thana that falls in her constituency with her supporters on Tuesday protesting against the partisan attitude of the local police. She used abusive language against the inspector-in-charge and even locked the thana from the outside for a few hours. The events were captured on camera. The matter was raised in West Bengal Assembly. The Speaker, H.A. Halim, while regretting it, said that Ms. Guha, by using such intemperate language, had lowered the dignity of the House. Robin Mondal, a senior legislator belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said the language used by Ms. Guha during her interaction with police officials in the thana was un-parliamentary. “It brings shame on a public representative,” he added. Expressing shock over the incident, Shyamal Chakravarty, member of the CPI(M)’s central committee, said it is surprising how such a person could have won the support of the people and get herself elected. “I cannot imagine that an MLA is capable of this (her behaviour at the thana),” he said. Leader of the Opposition and senior Trinamool Congress leader, Partha Chatterjee, criticized the police administration for functioning in a partisan manner and charged the State Government “of State-sponsored terrorism.”
