Guru’s detention under NSA revoked

Special Correspondent

He will be released only after he secures bail in two cases

Kaduvetti Guru

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday revoked the detention of Vanniyar Sangam president and senior PMK leader Kaduvetti J. Guru under the National Security Act (NSA).

The arrest was a thorny issue in the relations between the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Pattali Makkal Katchi.

The order issued by the public department said the government “based on the report of the Collector and the Superintendent of Police of Ariyalur district, has decided to revoke the detention order made against Guru, in view of the non-existence of the condition which prevailed at the time of his detention.”

“In exercise of power conferred under 14 (1) of the NSA, 1980, the government of Tamil Nadu revoked his detention and directed to be released forthwith unless he has been detained under any other law or he is serving any sentence by having been convicted by any court,” the order further said.

The revocation, the government said, was subject to the condition that “he shall refrain from making any speech or act in a manner which is injurious to social harmony and create animosity in society.”

Mr. Guru was arrested on July 5 in connection with an attempt to murder case and lodged in Central Prison, Tiruchi.

The next day he was slapped with a case for allegedly making a provocative speech at the district general body meeting of the PMK at Ariyalur. He was detained under the NSA on July 10.

The Madras High Court on November 18 upheld the order of detention under the NSA.

According to advocate K. Balu, Mr. Guru had filed two bail applications. The first filed in the Madras High Court was related to the attempt to murder case filed in the Meensuruti police station in Ariyalur district. The second petition has been filed in the Ariyalur Magistrate court in connection with a case filed against him for making a provocative speech at Ariyalur.

He will be released from detention only after securing bail in these two cases.
