DEMOLITION MAN: Karnataka’s Sunil Joshi, who scalped six Baroda batsmen in the visitors’ second innings, exults after breaching Pinal Shah’s defence on Wednesday.

BANGALORE: Karnataka beat the rain and Baroda on the fourth afternoon of their Ranji Trophy elite Group ‘B’ match at the RSI grounds here on Wednesday.

By virtue of its second successive win, this time by 10 wickets, the host now tops the group with 13 points from four matches, with a bonus point it achieved on Wednesday.

Tamil Nadu (13 from three) and Uttar Pradesh (11 from four) are behind Karnataka on the table. Baroda still languishes with two points.

Baroda, resuming at 204 for four in its second innings, was all out for 285. This set Karnataka a target of 60 runs, with rain clouds threatening to spoil the host’s party.

Robin Uthappa (44 not out; 24b, 6x4, 1x6), however, blasted away in the company K.B. Pawan (15 not out ) to script an emphatic win in just 6.2 overs.

Well-earned century

Earlier the solid Connor Williams completed a well-earned century. However, the other batsmen failed to emulate their skipper.

Williams (137; 371b, 17x4) lost partners and finally his own patience to loft Sunil Joshi to deep long-on where Manish Pandey held the skier on the second attempt. Joshi (six for 48) earned his 24th five-wicket haul. Three of them were thanks to the batsmen’s indiscreet shot selection while the last wicket of Utkarsh Patel was as much all rounder Akhil’s, for the brilliant running catch that he took.

Karnataka now takes Uttar Pradesh at home from December 12 to 15.

Corrections and Clarifications

A report "Karnataka crushes Baroda" ("Sport", November 27, 2008) said "Tamil Nadu (13 from three) and Uttar Pradesh (11 from four) are behind Karnataka on the table. Baroda still languishes with two points." Karnataka has 13 from four, Tamil Nadu has 12 from three (six versus UP, three versus Karnataka and three versus Maharashtra) and Baroda has four points from three matches. AP has two points.
