Lake turned rough owing to depression in the Bay of Bengal Condition of the four survivors said to be serious NELLORE: A 25-year-old woman and her daughter were reported missing when a boat capsized in Pulicat Lake in Tada mandal in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district on Tuesday night. However, the incident came to light on Wednesday afternoon when four other members in the boat swam ashore and alerted the villagers. Though admitted to Sullurpet Government Hospital, the condition of the four is stated to be serious. According to sources, the six persons belonging to fishermen community went fishing in the lake in a country-boat on Tuesday. At around midnight, the lake turned rough owing to depression in the Bay of Bengal and the boat overturned in the strong gales and tides. The missing persons were identified as Vanitha, wife of Ravi, and her two-year-old daughter Sneha. “The other four persons — Vadiamman, Desappa, Devi and Ravi — were all natives of Bheemalavari Palem and Kudikuppam villages. They were trapped in the lake for more than 15 hours and somehow swam ashore on Wednesday afternoon,” said the villagers. The lake was very rough due to heavy rain and gales. Gudur revenue divisional officer Ramachandra Reddy, Thada Tahsildar Janardhana Rao and police officials were monitoring the search operations. Cyclone alertSeveral parts in the district have been receiving good rainfall due to the depression formed in Bay of Bengal. The officials gave a cyclone alert in the district on Wednesday and more rain was predicted as the cyclone was expected to cross the coast at Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu in the night. Collector K. Ramgopal said the Revenue and Panchayat Raj department officials were asked to be alert and stay in the posted areas. Fishermen were instructed not to venture into the sea.
