Traditional Mysore Silk goes trendy

Bangalore: The traditional Mysore Silk has undergone a makeover, but with the stamp of heritage intact.

The State-owned Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) on Tuesday unveiled 14 new designs in crepe silk with woven colour thread work to attract young buyers with subtle designs and shades.

Designed by city-based designer Deepika Govind, they depict motifs from the architecture of Hampi, Belur and Halebeedu. The collection includes a special wedding range as well, in bolder shades and designs.

The saris, priced between Rs. 13,000 and Rs. 32,000, are an attempt to “add to the design repertoire rather than replace traditional designs”, said the designer. They add value to its distinctive drape and non-crush quality.

Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Shobha Karandlaje, who launched the collection in lieu of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, emphasised the need to give Mysore Silk greater visibility by launching it worldwide.

The Government would give technical and monetary assistance to sericulturists and weavers. Traditional silks had stood their ground despite tough competition from China, she said.
