Website on archaeology launched

Keen observer: School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu at an exhibition of rock paintings of Tamil Nadu organised by the Department of Archaeology in Chennai on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: The Department of Archaeology has launched its website that provides details of archaeological monuments and initiatives in archaeology in the State.

Launching the website on the occasion of the World Heritage Week celebrations here on Tuesday, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said, “the Department of Archaeology has the obligation of providing the younger generation the flavour of our rich cultural heritage.” “The website fulfils our dream of making the people understand the importance of archaeology and learn more from it about the past,” he added.

The department has also planned heritage walks and tours focussing on places having cultural remnants of archaeological importance.

“Archaeological monuments of Tamil Nadu and their inscriptions provide important evidence of the classical nature of Tamil as a language,” said Shanthini Kapoor, Commissioner of Museums and Commissioner of Archaeology.

“The use of science and technology in knowing and deciphering the cultural remnants has to be promoted by more initiatives in future,” said K. Arulmozhi, Member Secretary, State Planning Commission.

As part of the Heritage Week celebrations, the department organised an exhibition of rock paintings of Tamil Nadu. The graffiti marks, dancing figures, human figures with headgear and sun with rays were important aspects of the rock paintings. The Department of Archaeology has also introduced computerised printing of ‘Granda letters.’

Four books — Tamilnattu kalvettukal-2005, Kalvettu-75, Marine archaeological museum-Poompuhar Guide Book and Rajarajan Site Museum-Tanjavur Guide Book — were released by Mr.Thennarasu at the function.
