NEW DELHI: Bringing together some of the finest documentaries from more than 30 countries across the world, Delhi University’s Department of Sociology is organising the Delhi International Ethnographic Film Festival from Wednesday. The event that will last till this coming Sunday is being held in association with the embassies of France, Brazil and The Netherlands besides Alliance Francaise, Jamia Millia Islamia, Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Delhi University’s School of Environmental Studies. As many as 29 documentaries have been selected from over 200 film entries to be screened during the festival. The films cover a wide range of themes, including sexuality, ecology, displacement, music, indigenous cultures, childhood and politics. The festival will pay a tribute to David and Judith MacDougall by showcasing their nine films spanning a career of over four decades. Key figures in the history of documentary film-making, the MacDougalls, who have worked in various parts of the world, are expected to attend the festival. They will also deliver special talks during the event. The festival will also show a retrospective of eight films by and on legendary French film-maker Jean Rouch. A long-time associate of Rouch, Francoise Foucault, will be present during the festival to take part in the discussions. “Over the years, a street has been the focus of different documentaries as a space for encounter between people as well as a space for performance. The festival has chosen ‘The Street’ as a theme. This section has a country focus on Brazil with 13 films curated by Patricia Monte Mor of the Rio De Janeiro International Ethnographic Film Festival and ten films from the rest of the world,” said event coordinator Rahul Roy. The films will be screened at Alliance Francaise, James Beveridge Media Resource Centre at Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi School of Economics, and the School of Environmental Studies.Film-makers and guests from different countries will take part in panel discussions and post-film screening interactions with the audiences.
