Municipal authorities told to solve water problem in jail

SHIMOGA: Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Pandey has asked municipal authorities to immediately attend to water problem in the district jail here.

Presiding over a meeting of the Visitors’ Committee of the jail here on Tuesday, he instructed the municipal authorities to prepare a plan and estimate for improving water supply to the jail so that funds could be released through the municipal council or the district administration to take up the work immediately.

Jail Superintendent Kariappa said that bore wells dug up at a cost of Rs. 7 lakh last year had not been able to solve water problem in the jail which had 300 inmates.

The Deputy Commissioner also suggested to the authorities concerned to prepare an action plan on providing vocational training to the jail inmates to help them become self-reliant.

Mr. Pandey also suggested that literacy programme be taken up in a systematic manner to bring the jail inmates into the mainstream of society.

The meeting discussed the demands made for improving the living conditions in the jail.

Earlier, Principal District and Sessions Judge A.S. Patil, Mr. Pandey and members of the Visitors’ Committee went round the jail to take stock of the situation.

District Surgeon Nanda Shinge, Deputy Director of Public Instruction S.L. Chauvan, Deputy Superintendent of Police Thimmanna and member of the committee Kattige Channappa were among those present.
