Health programme for all villages

Staff Correspondent

Hospitals to be provided with 24-hour ambulance service

Deputy Commissioner C.M. Shirol inaugurating a workshop on the National Rural Health Programme in Bijapur on Tuesday.

Bijapur: Though successive governments have launched several schemes for welfare of people from grassroots level, these are not reaching people owing to lack of information and awareness, said Deputy Commissioner C.M. Shirol.

Speaking after inaugurating a one-day workshop for media persons on National Rural Health Programme organised by the Department of District Health and Family Welfare on its premises here on Tuesday, he said journalists played a vital role in creating awareness among people about these programmes.

Mr. Shirol said that amidst sustained efforts by the district-level officers to develop the condition of people, Bijapur was at 23rd position in human development index, 24th in health development aspects and 21st in education development in the State. The literacy per cent of women in the district was just 43 per cent, he added.

District Health Officer S.G. Biradar said the programme had been launched to reduce the number of deaths during deliveries, control spread of contagious diseases, provide primary health care services to every individual, provide nutritious food to the needy, provide ayurveda and homeopathic medicines at hospitals, teach yoga to patients, and establish cordial relations with other government departments for success of this programme.

The District Health office gave priority to encouraging institutional deliveries, he said. Under the National Rural Health Programme, the hospitals would be provided with 24-hour ambulance service equipped with advanced life-saving equipment, Mr. Biradar said

The people could get the benefit of this service at minimal charges by dialling a toll free number. The services would be provided to every village in the district, he added.
