Five-member gang of robbers arrested

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: In a major breakthrough, the Sampigehalli police on Monday claimed to have busted an inter-State gang of robbers, against whom eight cases of robbery and dacoity have been registered.

“A gang of five men, including some from neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, barged into several houses in the recent past and looted goods and jewellery worth several lakh of rupees. They used to threaten women who were alone at knife-point,” said a senior police official in North East Division, who confirmed the arrest of the accused.

Based on credible information, the Sampigehalli police raided several places and arrested five people, among whom, a few were working as security guards, the officer told The Hindu.

He said: “The accused gathered information about families that had fewer members and resided in secluded places. They attacked homemakers and looted valuables.”

Peacocks rescued

In another incident, the police rescued two peacocks from a person in Agrahara Layout on Monday.

The police, who did not reveal the identity of the person, said that he had kept the peacock eggs and hatched them with the help of a hen. The police said it was an offence under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972.
