Wrongful deletions being corrected, says CEO

Towards completion: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta addressing a review meeting of nine districts in Madurai.

MADURAI: Wrongful deletions in voter lists that were brought to the notice of the officers concerned would be corrected appropriately, said Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta here on Friday.

Speaking to reporters after presiding over a review meeting of officials from nine southern districts, he said that after the draft voter list was released recently voters from Kancheepuram and a few pockets in Madurai pointed to missing names. Immediately, the officials were directed to check them and ensure that they were included.

All the eligible voters could check the draft electoral rolls displayed at Collectorate and Corporation office and submit their claims till November 25 in the prescribed forms at the designated locations.

They would be amended after physical verification by booth-level officers, he said.On voter identity cards, he said that for those who had appeared for the photo-session, they would be distributed in about a month or 45 days and those who had applied now would get them after January, he clarified.

Mr. Gupta said that only the Election Commission of India would take a decision on the conduct of by-poll for the Tirumangalam Assembly constituency in Madurai district, which fell vacant following the demise of the sitting Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA.

When asked about the possibility of by-poll for Mangalur constituency in the wake of resignation submitted by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi MLA K. Selva Perunthagai, he said that they were yet to get an intimation in this regard from the Assembly Speaker.

Joint Chief Electoral Officer Jayasree Muralidharan, District Collectors P. Seetharaman (Madurai), P. Muthuveeran (Theni) and K. Raghupathy (Virudhunagar), who assumed office recently, participated in the review meeting. Madurai Corporation Deputy Commissioner Dinesh Oliver Ponraj, K. Shanti (PA General) trainee IAS officer Veeraraghava Rao and senior officers from Dindigul, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts also participated, a press release said.
