Five-member gang of robbers arrested Crime notes

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: In a major breakthrough, the Sampigehalli police on Monday claimed to have busted an inter-State gang of robbers, against whom eight cases of robbery and dacoity have been registered.

“A gang of five men, including some from neighbouring States of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, barged into several houses in the recent past and looted goods and jewellery worth several lakh of rupees. They used to threaten women who were alone at knife-point,” said a senior police official in North East Division, who confirmed the arrest of the accused.

Based on credible information, the Sampigehalli police raided several places and arrested five people, among whom, a few were working as security guards, the officer told The Hindu.

Salesman murdered

A gang of four men murdered a salesman of a textile showroom on the busy Goods Shed Road even as a stunned public watched the gory incident in disbelief on Sunday night. A police party that was patrolling in the vicinity tried in vain to track down the culprits.

The police said that Basavaraja (20), a native of Devegowdana Koppalu in Nagamangala taluk of Mandya district, was walking on Goods Shed Road, near Binny Mills when the gang attacked him around 8.30 p.m.. The gang slit the throat of the victim, who was an employee of Ashwini Silks on ASR Street in Chickpet. Cottonpet Police Inspector K.P. Gopal and his personnel, who were patrolling the area, witnessed the incident and shifted the victim to Victoria Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

While the police and the public chased the accused, they managed to escape through a vacant land belonging to the railways. The motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained, said the police. The victim had rented a room in Kamakshipalya.

Peacocks rescued

In another incident, the police rescued two peacocks from a person in Agrahara Layout on Monday.

The police, who did not reveal the identity of the person, said that he had kept the peacock eggs and hatched them with the help of a hen.
