Those who enrolled themselves under distance education system with Bharathidasan University, Tiruchi, in June have so far not received any communication from the university about conduct of contact classes. On repeated enquiries made over phone, the staff simply reply that letters would be sent within a week whereas numerous weeks have passed by. Only four months are left for the final examination and this inordinate delay in conducting contact classes may make it difficult for students to take part. I request the university authorities to pay immediate attention on this matter. SP. Murugappan, Karur. WaterloggingState Government widened the Thanjavur Medical College Road into a four-way lane by providing a median. While widening the road, the people in charge of work excavated more earth in front of my Rajamani Arcade building (opposite ICICI Bank ATM). This has resulted in stagnation of rainwater by the main road making it impossible for people to come to my complex which has sever shops. Senior citizens also find it very difficult to come to my complex by crossing the road. The above disadvantage was brought to the notice of highways authorities but in vain. . S.P.Shanmugasundram, Thanjavur. Left in the lurchThe Sixth Pay Commission report of Central Government was implemented about two months back and pensioners were greatly benefited. Due to certain anomalies in the pay band of two categories of armed forces officers and their equivalent civilian counterparts, implementation of defence pension orders were referred to a high level committee. When the civilian counterparts are enjoying the fruits of the commission report, defence pensioners are anxiously awaiting the revised orders. Now it has become a million dollar question as to when the revised order will see the light of the day as it has become anybody’s guess. R.Jambunathan Thiruthuraipoondi. Delay in rail lineRumours are circulating in Delta districts regarding the inordinate delay in reopening the main line to Chennai via Thanjavur and Kumbakonam. Some of them are: (i) Omni bus owners are applying pressure to delay the work so that they can continue to enjoy the windfall by squeezing the passengers; (ii) A Tamil Nadu regional political party closely connected to the Railway ministry is settling scores with a major coalition leader by denying rail connectivity to his region. N. Narayanaswamy Kumbakonam. Grocery items through PDSTamil Nadu Government has recently introduced supply of masala pack for Rs.50 through ration shops. It is a welcome step. As prices of essential items rise day by day, the State Government may take urgent measures to provide other grocery items through the public distribution system so that the people can get these items at a nominal rate. This may lead to reduction of prices of these items in the market. A.Haja Abdul Khader, Adirampattinam. Brash ration staffThe very purpose of the State Government distributing certain essential commodities to family card holders through its fair-price shops gets defeated by the unhelpful and brash employees in these outlets. Housewives, who visit these shops, suffer. Even when all the items are available, they do not get these in one go. Instead, they are forced to make more visits. In some families, working couples entrust their cards with their neighbours or friends for purchases. But the staff insist on the head or any member of the family to appear in person. How can they refuse to issue the eligible items? Periodical surprise inspection at these shops by civil supplies authorities will help reduce the harassment consumers are subjected to. Vengarai S. Raman, Thanjavur. Pension anomaliesThere are numerous anomalies in the pay structure and pension recommended by the Central Pay Commission. A departmental and districtwise grievance cell may be constituted to redress and settle these disputes. Will the Central Government do this? K. Santhanam Kumbakonam VacationAs Indian born Judges are not alien to the seasonal conditions of their own mother country, “the system of lengthy vacation is better done away with’, as per the recommendations of the Parliamentary-Standing committee of the Law and Justice Ministry, till the backlog of cases, is cleared in our country. R. S. Moorthy, Karur. Remove hoardingsIt looks good that a lot of renovation works are being carried out in Thanjavur Railway Station entrance building. But is it necessary to have the hoardings which mar the elegance and image of the old building. I request the authorities to remove the hoardings. Chitra Sabesan, Thiruvaiyaru.
