“We will not allow any force to snatch our rights on Periyar water”

Staff Reporter

THEVARAM (THENI): The State government will write a letter to the Centre to protest against deputation of a special committee, comprising three MPs including two from Kerala, to the Periyar Dam on January 1 to check its strength.

“We will not allow any force to snatch our rights on Periyar water,” said Durai Murugan, Minister for PWD, on Monday.

“Unfair”

Inaugurating the 18th canal at T. Sinthalaiseri village near here, the Minister said, “It is unfair. How can a team that has no technical expertise check the condition of Periyar Dam? Its members are only politicians and not experts or technicians. How will they assess the strength or weakness of the dam,” he asked.

Farmers in Cumbum valley should also question the team’s visit to the dam site and make them understand the State’s stand on the issue, he said.

“I will take up this issue with the Centre,” he said. Already, hydrology experts had checked the dam thoroughly and confirmed that it was strong enough to store water up to 142 feet.

He charged that Kerala was spreading “false information” that five districts would be marooned if the dam breached. In case of breach, ten or 15 tmc of water in Periyar dam would stagnate in some corner of Idukki dam that has 55 TMC capacity.
