Fifth win on the trot for Bagan

KOLKATA: Skipper Baichung Bhutia did the star turn for Mohun Bagan, scoring the lone goal of the match immediately after half-time against Mahindra United in a 10th round I-League football match at the Salt Lake Stadium, here on Monday.

With this victory — the fifth on the trot — Bagan has 18 points and enjoys the second position in the standing behind Sporting Clube de Goa. Mahindra tasted its fifth defeat to remain on nine points from 10 games.

In a match of mediocre standard, both teams were guilty of missing at least a couple of chances. If Sushil Singh of Mahindra made a hash of two opportunities from close range, the two stalwarts of Mohun Bagan, Jose Barreto and Bhutia, messed it up once each.

The match-winner came in the 46th minute following a melee in the Mahindra penalty box. Bhutia slotted home the loose ball from inside the six-yard box. This was Indian skipper’s second goal of the League. — Special Correspondent
