Self-immolation bid: three held

Staff Reporter

Mettuppalayam: The Mettuppalayam police have arrested three persons on charges of self-immolation attempt during a demonstration here on Monday. The police said, Mettuppalayam Pulavar Pasarai had announced an agitation against the transfer of a town planning official allegedly based on complaints of corrupt practices. The demonstrators criticised the decision to retain officials against whom Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption had registered cases following detection of unaccounted money during a surprise check recently. Even as the demonstration was on, it is learnt that R. Arunkumar (22) attempted to pour kerosene on him and was prevented by the police. He was taken into custody. After the demonstration, members of the pasarai R. Nagaraj and V. Naveen Kumar attempted self-immolation. The police removed them.
