“Motivate rural students before teaching them English”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy on Monday urged government college teachers to motivate rural students, before teaching them English as a language for communication.

Inaugurating an English language training course for college teachers here, he said most of the students of government colleges hailed from rural areas. So, teaching them English would not be an easy task. Initially, the teachers should motivate them, explaining the importance of English.

“We are not against English; we are insisting that the medium of instruction be in the mother tongue, while English should be used for communication. With the advent of modern teaching equipment, let us teach English to students with understanding,” he said.
