BANGALORE: The e-procurement method introduced for goods and services purchased by the State Government is gaining popularity among contractors. Last year the Government purchased goods and services worth around Rs. 750 crore. There are 1,000 contractors and suppliers who are using the e-procurement facility, and they are happy with the system. There are 550 government officials involved in promoting e-procurement. ‘More needs to be done’However, much more needs to be done, according to D.S. Ravindran, Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for e-Governance. He was speaking at a workshop on e-procurement organised by the Centre for e-Governance here on Monday. Outlining the importance of e-procurement, Dr. Ravindran said contractors were satisfied with the system. It eliminated red tape and corruption and also protected the identity of bidders and bid details. The high transparency that the system provided was advantageous to goods and service providers, he said. The Principal Secretary, Department of e-Governance, and Chairman of the Centre for e-governance, B.L. Sridhar, who presided over the inaugural session, said more contractors should be encouraged to use the e-procurement route for their business with the Government.
