Heavy rain floods several low-lying areas

PUDUCHERRY: Rain continues to batter Puducherry for the third day with the region recording a total rainfall of 92.6 millimetres till 8.30 a.m on Monday. All government and private schools in the region will continue to remain closed on Tuesday due to the rain.

According to Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, rainfall was likely to occur at most places over Puducherry and isolated heavy rain to very heavy rain has been forecasted for the next 48 hours.

Several low-lying areas in the town and on outskirts witnessed inundation. Officials in the Revenue Department said schools and community halls were kept open in case people have to be moved to safer places.

They said a few houses in Bhavani Nagar at Ariyankuppam, Thavalakuppam, T.N. Palayam and Uppalam were damaged in the rain. The District Collectorate on Monday opened a Central Control Room in its office at Saram for providing assistance.

A communication from the Collectorate said those require any assistance can call the toll free number 1070 or 1077. They can also contact District Collector G. Ragesh Chandra at 94432 57422, Sub-Collector (Revenue-North) Vijaya Kumar Bidhuri at 94433 83418, Sub-Collector (Revenue-South) Lal Tin Kumah Franklin at 9443383419, Tahsildar Puducherry Yeswanthaiah at 9443406554, Tahsildar, Oulgaret M. S Ramesh at 9442131762, Tahsildar, Villianur Subramneeswara at 9443790887 and Tahsildar Bahour R. Arunachalam at 942119389 for assistance. (EOM)

In addition to these measures, revenue officials were on regular rounds to several areas.
