Demand to introduce boating in Periaeri

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATTUR: Efforts are under way to develop Periaeri (Big Lake), situated on way to Madapalli here, as a tourist destination by introducing boating facilities.

Tirupattur MLA T.K.Raja along with Tirupattur Sub Division Sub-Collector Hanish Chaabra, Tirupattur Municipality Chairperson Chockammal Tulasinathan and Tirupattur Panchayat Union Chairman Annadurai inspected Periaeri recently to study the feasibility of introducing boat service.

The demand to introduce boating was raised by the MLA eight years ago. Mr. Raja had proposed for a Children’s Park adjacent to the lake.

The lake is under the control of the Public Works Department (PWD). Permission had to be got from the PWD for the Children’s Park.

Mr. Raja told The Hindu that he had proposed to introduce boating at the lake as it was now being misused. Residents living opposite to the lake are dumping all kinds of wastes into the lake.

The Municipality was not in a position to regularly clear the dumped waste. This led to environmental degradation.

He further said that drainage water from various areas of the town was let into the lake. The lake is also an active breeding spot for mosquitoes and other kinds of insects. The PWD so far had not carried out any desilting operation on Periaeri.

Mr. Raja demanded that the lake be desilted and deepened so that boating could be introduced.
