India posts 3-1 victories

NEW DELHI: India scored identical 3-1 victories in both sections in the 10th and penultimate round of the Chess Olympiad at Dresden, Germany, on Sunday.

India, looking to at least justify its 13th seeding in the Open section, downed Czech Republic and moved to the 22nd spot.

Surya Shekhar Ganguly and G. N. Gopal won on the lower boards while K. Sasikiran and P. Hari Krishna were held.

Similarly, in the ladies section, India outplayed Slovenia 3-1 with Swati Ghate and Mary Ann Gomes emerging as winners on the lower boards while D. Harika and Tania Sachdev drew on the top two boards. The 11th seeded India is placed 10th with one round to go.

In Tuesday’s final round, Indian men play 25th seed Slovakia while the ladies take on Armenia, seeded six.

In the Open section, Armenia regained the lead by beating Serbia after Ukraine brought down overnight leader Israel.

Among the ladies, Poland emerged as the new leader following its victory over Armenia.

Harika; Jana Krivec drew with Tania Sachdev; Ana Srebrnic lost to Swati Ghate; Ksenija Novak lost to Mary Ann Gomes); Serbia (25.5) drew with Ukraine (27.5) 2-2; Armenia (25.5) lost to Poland (26) 1.5-2.5; China (25.5) lost to Georgia (28) 1.5-2.5; Uzbekistan (22) lost to USA (28) 0.5-3.5; Russia (27) bt Hungary (24.5) 3-1; France (28) bt Azerbaijan (19.5) 3-1; Slovakia (23.5) lost to Netherlands (22.5) 1.5-2.5.
