Terror suspect arrested from Hyderabad

Kannur: As part of its investigation into the terrorist links of persons from Kerala, the Special Investigation Team has nabbed Abdul Jabbar, suspected to have escaped during an encounter with the army in Jammu and Kashmir in October. Abdul Jabbar, 30, who hails from Malappuram district, was taken into custody on Saturday by the SIT team, led by Deputy Inspector-General of Police T.K. Vinod Kumar, from Hyderabad, where the Kashmir-based ultra outfits used to hold camps for the newly recruited youths, V.K. Akbar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, SIT, told PTI here. Jabbar is likely to be brought here on Monday and will be produced before a court in Thalassery, Mr. Akbar said.

Jabbar escaped from the clutches of the army in Kashmir during an encounter in which four youths hailing from Kerala, including two from Kannur, were killed, giving credence to the southern State’s links with the Kashmir-based ultra outfits.

With Jabbar’s arrest, the SIT had nabbed eight youths from Kerala for allegedly closely associating with Kashmir-based terrorist groups, which was found to have held training camps in Hyderabad for the newly recruited hands. The alleged links of persons from Kerala with ultra groups came to light with the arrest of Abdul Jaleel here on October 18 as he admitted to have received several calls on his mobile phone from local youths Mohammed Fayas and Mohammad Fahiz before they got killed in October second week in army encounters in Kashmir. The SIT is on the look out for two more persons, including terror mastermind T. Nasir, who is believed to have lured several youths into the terrorist camps. — PTI
