Announce stand on closure of belt shops: Roja Says suicides by farmers, weavers continuing
HYDERABAD: Taking objection to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s claims on women empowerment, the Telugu Mahila, women’s wing of the Telugu Desam Party, has demanded that the Congress leadership clarify its stand on the number of seats it would give to women in the coming elections. The Congress government should announce its stand on the closure of belt shops and implementation of 33 per cent reservation to women in elected bodies if it was really committed to empowerment of women. Telugu Mahila president R.K. Roja ridiculed the Chief Minister’s claims on making one crore women as “lakhpatis”. Addressing a press conference, she asked him to clarify as to how women empowerment would be possible when the spree of suicides by farmers and weavers were continuing and their families were facing starvation. Dr. Reddy’s `sister sentiment’ about Chevella constituency represented by Sabita Indra Reddy was ‘hollow’ as the segment did not see any development over the past four-and-a-half years. Replying to queries, she ridiculed Congress’ claims on getting 240 seats and asked why was the Congress leadership resorting to criticism of TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu when it was confident about the welfare schemes and why was it roping in actors for wooing people. Asked about the TDP’s efforts to rope in actors from Nandamuri clan, she said they were coming to support the party that was founded by N.T. Rama Rao and the TDP did not offer them any allurements.
